Lessons from Nature 1


















Over 60 onions harvested from our garden, a bumper crop.  What catches your eye in the photo above?  Most likely, the larger onions got your attention.  Now look at the photo below:






This is a picture of one of only three or four in the bunch that produced seed heads.  The size of the bulb is unremarkable; actually, it is one of the smaller ones.  Yet in the head are hundreds of seeds, available for a bumper crop next year!  The bulb's diminuitive size resulted from the nutrients and resources that were allocated to the seed head rather than used by the bulb itself to grow to a larger size.  This onion's greater value is in the potential future generations it has produced, and not in itself.

Where does my effort and resources go?  Do I live to be a healthy follower of Jesus?  I will be recognized as robust and impressive in my faith, and a contributor in my own right.  Or do I seek to build up others for the sake of future generations, and put their interests ahead of my own?  Thank You, Lord, for onions.
